Brad Renfro was joined by friends and family for the last time during a funeral service in North Knoxville, Tenn. on Monday night, after his premature death on Jan. 15.
Brad Renfro is best remembered for his roles in “The Client” as an 11-year-old, alongside Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones, and in “Sleepers,” joining a cast that included Robert de Niro, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver.
He passed away at just 25 on Jan. 15, when he was found in his Los Angeles home. An autopsy was performed last week, but the cause of death has yet to be determined pending toxicology tests results.
Friends, family and fans gathered Monday night in the actor’s hometown to bid him farewell. According to E! Online, some 600 people showed up and offered their condolences to the Renfro family. A funeral service was held and the actor’s great-uncle, Michael Earl, officiated at the service.
“Brad had problems just like I have problems, just like you have problems, just like all of us have trials and tribulations that we go through,” Earl said, as quoted by the Knoxville News Sentinel.
“Was Brad perfect? Well, I can tell you, I'm not. Are you? But I have had that righteousness extended unto me that comes only by the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And I'm gonna see him again.”
A surprise revelation came Tuesday, when the obituary placed in the Sentinel by Renfro’s family disclosed the fact that the actor had a young son, whom they only named “Y Renfro” to protect his identity.
Renfro's father and stepmother told TMZ that the boy lives with his mother in Japan and that Renfro recently spent time with his son before he died. “We did expect this because people didn't know he had a son,” his stepmother told TMZ. “But we're very thankful Brad got to see his son before he died.”
His breakthrough role was Mark Sway in the big screen adaptation of John Grisham’s “The Client,” and Renfro continued to appear in films steadily over the following years, in “Ghost World,” “American Girl” and “The Jacket,” as well as the upcoming “The Informers,” his last film. He joined a cast including Winona Ryder, Mickey Rourke and Billy Bob Thornton.
