Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s long-established plans of
reviving the Three Stooges have finally found their fulfillment with MGM.
The brothers who directed “There’s Something About Mary” and
“Kingpin” will refresh their pursuit to transform the humorous turmoil of the
slapstick trio into a modern comedy for the studio. Although the Farrellys have
been trying for five years to make their Stooges movie at Warner Bros., Larry,
Moe and Curly will be revived by MGM, which announced a November 20, 2009,
release date for the film.
The siblings will produce the movie along with Conundrum partner
Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler, while Earl and Robert Benjamin will serve
as executive producers, Variety reported.
The film will not depict, however, the lives of the three comics,
as it aims to portray a Stooge-like entertainment, placing the trio in a modern
production.
Reports link two Academy Award-winning actors to the roles,
but nothing has been confirmed yet. Among the names circulating in the media
are Russell Crowe and Mel Gibson.
Peter Farrelly told Variety that the production team would
organize auditions in three or four cities in order to find the perfect man to
fill the shoes of Curly, the cutest member of the trio.
“The Three Stooges are a timeless staple of comedy,” explained
Mary Parent, chairman of MGM's worldwide motion picture group, according to
Reuters. “And when we heard what the Farrellys had in mind, we knew it was time
for Larry, Moe and Curly to return to the big screen.”
