The teen who disappeared while swimming in Lake
Michigan on Sunday is still missing and most probably dead,
according to officials.
DaVante Jackson, 14, was swimming with 11 other friends, ages 14
to 23, at the Indiana Jones on Sunday when they were told that the beach was
closed because of four-foot waves and a riptide. Therefore, the teenagers came
to Kemil Beach, where there were no lifeguards or
warning signs.
About 1 p.m., Jackson and two of his friends were seen
struggling in the water. Gene Davis, spokesman for the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources said the other two friends could be saved by other people who
were near them. Unfortunately, Jackson
was farther out in the water and nobody could get to him. They actually saw him
go under and not come back, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Chanell Davis, Jackson’s
mother was really upset at what she saw when coming to the beach.
“There were no lifeguards, no signs about not swimming, no
nothing. There were still people going in the water. I called out ‘Why are you
getting into the water when they’re looking for my son? Finally, the police
started telling them to get out,” she said.
Three teams of divers swept the lake bottom from boats,
while helicopter and planes scanned the area from the air. Also 19 divers took
turns searching the lake in 11-to 15-foot-deep water, but the teenager was not
found.
The search was suspended about 6:30 p.m. on Monday and will
resume on Tuesday morning.
