LG to Launch Netflix-Capable TVs

On Sunday, LG Electronics and Netflix officially announced that they would work together to release TV sets that are capable to stream video content from Netflix directly from the web without any external hardware.

This announcement is not surprising, as the two companies did the same thing last year, when they had introduced set-top boxes and Blu-Ray players, which were equipped to deliver content from the DVD rental company.

In order to provide its videos to users in a more intuitive way, Netflix has been looking for other partners, too. Recently, a representative at Netflix stated that the company has a partnership with Microsoft that aims to deliver users its web content directly through the Xbox gaming console. In order to do this, Netflix has developed proprietary movie software, which is embedded in all Netflix-capable home entertainment equipment.

People who will use the movie software from Netflix on their Xbox will have to subscribe to a monthly rental plan. After that, all they have to do is connect the console to their TV and stream the content from the website directly on their TV screen.

Currently, Netflix is offering a wide range of video content, as users can choose from a database consisting of more than 12,000 movies and television episodes. The database was released in 2007 and it provides instant viewing of the content. However, Netflix is planning to extend its online offer, as the company currently has more than 100,000 movie titles and television shows in its global library.

The new series of Netflix-capable television sets will be presented in January, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. LG Electronics has not yet stated how much the new TVs would cost.
