LG and Samsung announced their plans to develop a device that will allow the access of digital television on cell phones.

"LG and Samsung are already world-class in digital TV and mobile communications. Through this collaboration, we also have an opportunity to lead the North American mobile DTV market," said Woo Paik, LG president and chief technology officer, in a statement according to PCMag.

Details and specifications on their product were not presented, neither was specified the standard chosen to move ahead with. Information is expected to surface later this year.

Lg and Samsung stated that their proposed mobile DTV system will use the existing terrestrial digital DTV broadcast bandwidth and will require from the broadcasters a insignificant equipment investment.

"We will step up our effort to provide a technology that will benefit both consumers and broadcasters," said Park Jong-woo, head of Samsung Electronics' digital media division, as quoted by TradingMarkets.

The plan is to assure a rapid adoption by the Advanced Television Systes Committee (ATSC) of a common standard. The ATSC is an international, nonprofit organization that develops or adopts voluntary standards for digital television systems and it plans to adopt by 2009 a mobile DTV standard for the U.S. market and the timing for the two companies’ decision seems to be perfect.

Next year, every American analog television station will end its transmission and broadcasters will use a new set of frequencies and cross to an all-digital standard provided by ATSC DTV.
