LG Introduces Novelty OLEDs

LG Electronics is taking out the big guns. At the last edition of the International Consumer Electronics Show, LG Electronics has presented one of their latest products, namely a 15-inch OLED (organic light emitting diode) display. The novelty factor is the thickness of the display, which LG managed to engineer to be of only 0.85 millimeters. This thickness is less than half of the display LG wants to market by the end of 2009.

The aforementioned 15-inch OLED display, of 2.5 millimeters thick, will apparently be available in the second half of 2009, according to Young Su Kim, one of the engineers at LG Electronics USA.

The 2.5 millimeter OLED displays were shown at the International Consumer Electronics Show right by the thinner displays, of 0.85 millimeter OLED displays.
According to Young Su Kim, the novel OLED technology has the benefit of providing more vibrant colors on the screens using the display, but at a much lower power consumption as opposed to the widely used mainstream LCD displays.

The reason why these displays are much thinner than the LCDs  is that OLEDs do not require a backlight, as the organic materials in the OLEDs have the capacity to emit their own light.

Just this week, LG also announced that they will be marketing a 15-inch OLED screen of just 1.4 millimeters thick later this year.
