LG Electronics released on Sunday a few details about its new upcoming multimedia phone, Arena, which is scheduled for release next week in Barcelona, during the Mobile World Congress.

The new Arena KM900 features the new LG user interface, the innovative and dynamic 3D S-Class, which allows users to switch screens inside a three-dimensional interface, using a cube-like display. The interface ensures quick access to several functions such as phone calls and e-mail. Customers will use a 3-inch WVGA touch screen with 800 x 400 resolution.

The rich 3D graphics were designed to make the device easy to navigate and for users to quickly access any part of the menu, whether for making a call, listening to music, watching a movie or for viewing a picture.

"The direct, intuitive, and dynamic S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before. With rich 3D graphics, touch sensitivity and exciting multimedia capabilities, it will truly make ARENA a fully loaded multimedia phone," said Skott Ahn, LG Mobile’s president and CEO, in a statement.

The handset also includes Dolby and Divx support, HSDPA (High-speed Downlink Packet Access) data at 7.2Mbps, a 5 megapixel camera that is expected to deliver "DVD quality video recording," Wi-Fi and also GPS (Global Positioning System).

The company decided to release this sneak preview ahead of next week’s event, when the Arena will be officially introduced to the market. The phone is considered by some a potential rival to Apple’s iPhone. Still, such statements appear to surface every time a new smartphone appears on the market.
