The life and death of late frontman of 1990s iconic rock band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, will be turned into a movie by Universal Pictures, according to media reports.
Kurt Cobain was barely in his late 20s when his life ended abruptly and shockingly. At 27, Cobain was a rock star, a symbol for a whole generation; a married man, and a father. In 1994, at age 27, he was found dead in his Seattle home, shot through the head.
Though authorities ruled his death suicide from a self-inflicted wound, the issue has since become debatable and controversial. Cobain died at the height of his career. Nirvana had been nominated several times for a Grammy award. Their albums had sold millions.
Hollywood Reporter now announces that screenwriter David Benioff (“Troy,” “Stay” and the forthcoming “Wolverine”) has signed on to write a movie about the late rocker.
Benioff will reportedly use as a reference Charles Cross' 2001 book “Heavier Than Heaven,” which detailed the rise and fall of the Nirvana frontman.
It has not been confirmed yet whether Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, will appear onscreen. She is executive producing, along with her attorney Howard Weitzman.
Cobain and Love married in 1992. their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was born later that year. Courtney Love was at the time the frontwoman of alternative rock band Hole. She has since pursued a solo career and turned to acting.
Cross’s biography of Cobain was criticized upon publication for not having included the participation of Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl or Cobain's mother, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Director Gus Van Sant based his 2005 movie “Last Days” on what may have happened in Cobain's final days.
The documentary “Kurt Cobain About a Son” debuted at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by AJ Schnack, it features audio tapes of interviews between Cobain and journalist Michael Azerrad conducted for the book in the early 1990s.
Forbes magazine’s 2006 list of richest dead celebrities found Kurt Cobain to be the most prosperous, ahead of Elvis Presley, John Lennon or Andy Warhol.
