A Ku Klux Klan leader has been charged with
murder following the death of an Oklahoma
woman recruited to join the Ku Klux Klan. Cynthia Lynch, 43, of Tulsa, Oklahoma,
was shot dead as she tried to leave the clan’s campsite.
The woman had responded to a website asking
for new recruits to the Dixie Brotherhood. She went to Louisiana to meet the members of the group. Authorities
say she was taken to a campsite near Sun, Louisiana,
about 60 miles north of New Orleans.
After several specific rituals, including a head-shaving, she decided to leave
the initiation ceremony and asked to be taken to a nearby town. The Police
report did not give other details about the initiation ceremony and what it
involved.
The woman’s decision to leave led to an
argument with Foster, during which he pushed her down and shot her with a
.40-caliber handgun, according to the Police report.
Members of the group, including two women,
tried to cover up the killing by burning her belongings and removing the .40-caliber
slug from her body.
Charges were filled after authorities found
the woman’s body hidden in a bush near the campsite. The suspects were taken into
custody without incident, authorities said.
Raymond “Chuck” Foster, 44, the group’s
leader, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of the Oklahoma woman.
Authorities found weapons, Ku Klux Klan
flags and uniforms, including a black “imperial wizard” uniform at the
campsite.
The Klan group in the Sun was very small and
its members were quite young.
“The IQ level of this group is not
impressive, to be kind,” Sheriff Jack Strain told a news conference. “I can't
imagine anyone feeling endangered or at risk by any one of these kooks.”
