Even though she was given the boot from "American Idol," Kristy Lee Cook has plenty of reasons to celebrate, including her recent marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Andy Dobner.
The recently eliminated 24-year-old was presented with a ring last month but preferred to keep it a secret because "I just wanted to be focused on Idol," Cook said.
It looks like the focusing didn't really pay off and Cook herself revealed she was shocked to be the one leaving the talent show Wednesday night.
"I was kind of upset that I went home because I thought I was getting stronger and stronger," said Cook, whose goal was to make it among the final five. "I thought ["Forever"] was my best performance so far. I thought I had at least another week in me."
However, Cook wasn’t given much time to mourn her exit because on the same night she was voted off, Dobner surprised her with a second proposal, this time on TV.
Dropping to his knee, a move he skipped the first time out in the sauna, Dobner asked Cook to marry him.
"He owed it to me," she said.
Her ring, a marquis cut, has "quite a few diamonds on it," the singer told reporters Thursday. "We kind of picked it out together a long time ago just kind of for fun, shopping around for a ring."
There's no wedding date yet, although Cook guessed she might walk down the aisle in June 2009. And she more than guessed that she might invite the Idol judges, Cowell included.
"Oh, yes, of course I would," Cook said. "I definitely would."
According to People, the two were introduced by a common friend while Cook was waiting tables at an Italian restaurant in Grants Pass, Oregon.
"He had just been in the woods chopping down Christmas trees," Cook was quoted by People as saying. "He came down [to the restaurant] and he was so cute, and he sat down in a booth and when I was walking off all the girls caught him double looking at me hanging out of the booth! And I was like, ‘Hey, you know I need a Christmas tree,’ and he said, ‘Well, I’ll take you up and we’ll go.’ So, I gave him my number and he called me up 20 minutes later while I was at work and said, ‘You want to do something tomorrow?’"
