According to unofficial results, former Kosovo Albanian
guerrilla leader’s party won the elections for the parliament on Sunday.
Hashim Thaci promised Kosovo the independence from Serbia.
His party, the Democratic Party (PDK), is leading with 35 percent of the vote,
with 90 percent of the ballots counted, Reuters reports.
The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), President
Fatmir Sejdiu’s party, has only 22 percent of the vote and is in second place.
PDK will probably have to form a coalition with the LDK, according
to an official from the PDK.
Thaci is an ex-leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army who faced
accusations of terrorism by former Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic and was
forced to hide.
He said that his first priority will be to declare Kosovo
independent from Serbia.
Kosovo is a province
of Serbia having a population
mainly made up of Ethnic-Albanians.
A small Serbian minority is present in the country and is
under the U.N. administration since 1999.
Albanians and Serbs received a deadline from the United
Nations that the future of the province will be decided until December 10.
Thaci addressed his supporters in Prisitna, capital of
Kosovo, late Saturday, saying: "These elections are not about Kosovo's
status. We will declare independence immediately after December 10.”
Still, it was recorded a low turnout at the polls. Around 45
percent of the 1.5 million inhabitants voted on Saturday.
The Serbs boycotted the poll because they want Kosovo to
remain in Serbia,
CNN reports.
According to Sven Lindholm, a spokesman for the Organization
for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the
international mediation body, the preparation for the vote was hampered by the
Serbian authorities.
The Serbian government didn’t allow for the schools in the
region controlled by Serbia
to be used as polling stations.
He said: “We were forced to set up mobile units. It was an
inconvenience but we got over it.”
