Famous French museum Château de Versailles is hosting an exhibition by the American artist Jeff Koons. It’s the first time the prestigious French museum hosts such an ambitious retrospective of one contemporary artist.
However, many art lovers were vexed by the contrast Koon’s 17 sculptures make with the classy, old-fashioned Versailles. The American artist nicknamed "the king of kitsch" by the newspapers, presented 17 of his works from the past twenty years.
His works, which include a giant balloon dog, an inflatable lobster or a porcelain statue of Michael Jackson, stirred the French media with their presence at the Versailles. Many newspapers were completely against the exhibition of Jeff Koons, an artist who set auction records (two of his sculptures were sold for $23 million apiece).
Nevertheless, Koons didn’t seem to care much about the media frenzy. He just seems very happy that his works have made it to the Versailles.
"It's the proudest moment of my life," Koons told reporters about what surely is the biggest contemporary art exhibition held at the famous French museum.
In an interview with reporters, Koons underlined the fact that King Louis XIV, who built the Versailles, was very opened to arts and meant the Versailles to be a place that would welcome art.
“I hope that my work shows respect to the palace and continues a positive tradition in Versailles," the 53-year-old artist added.
