The format battle between the two
technologies that are to eventually make us forget about the traditional DVDs won’t
be probably over in just days or weeks. It is probably this concurrency and
infinite rivalry between the HD DVD format and the Blu-ray Disc that are
keeping the both camps on track. From time to time new devices and new products appear
either for the HD DVD technology or for the Blu-ray one. However, the fact is
that the format war won’t just end up at some time.
And in this context all the third
parties involved in the format war become more than important for the two
camps. This is why the recent controversy around Kmart has arisen in just days.
The rumors that have been spreading recently on the Internet have been saying
about Kmart’s starting to support the HD DVD format exclusively. But, according
to the company itself it seems that these have been just rumors and that Kmart
will keep on supporting both the formats after all.
"There have been numerous
statements in the media (Wednesday), attributed to Toshiba, indicating
exclusive support for the HD-DVD format in Kmart stores. These statements are
false. Kmart intends to support both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray platforms, and has
no plans to support either platform exclusively." – has stated Jonathan Magasanik,
the vice president of home electronics for Sears Holdings, the parent company
of Kmart.
So, we have nothing to worry
about, as both the HD DVD and the Blu-ray formats will be backed up by Kmart.
