Renowned American comedian Jerry Lewis was detained by
police in Las Vegas last week when airport
screeners found an unloaded gun in his baggage as the 82-year-old was preparing
to board on a flight from Las Vegas to Detroit, authorities
announced on Tuesday.
Jerry Lewis was carrying a small .22-caliber handgun when he
got at the security screening area on Friday at Las Vegas McCarran
International Airport,
according to Officer Ramon Denby, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Department, cited by Reuters.
The comedian was detained for a short period of time and the
gun was confiscated, because Lewis was not in the possession of a weapon
permit.
The star of the 1963 movie “The Nutty Professor” and the
half of a madly booming comedic pair with singer Dean Martin decades ago, was voyaging
to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, in order to perform a one-man show, a source close
to the comedian informed, according to Reuters. Lewis’ manager, Claudia
Marghilano, informed the Associated Press that the handgun was an emptied prop
gun which the “King of Comedy” sometimes used in his performances. Furthermore,
Claudia Marghilano reported that Jerry Lewis had no idea that the gun was in
the bag along with other props.
The weapon was registered to Lewis and he will have to
attend a court hearing in order to recover it, Denby explained.
Since 1966, Lewis has hosted a yearly telethon to raise funds
for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. What’s more, the telethon raised $63.8
million only last year.
