Kindle 2, for U.S. Only?

As with the previous generation of the popular eBook reader, it seems that Amazon has not yet planned to sell Kindle 2 outside the United States.  According to a spokesperson at Amazon, the company does not want to “comment” on further releases regarding Kindle.

Analysts pointed out that the way Kindle has been developed makes it hard to sell it worldwide now. The eBook reader more or less depends on Amazon’s Whispernet. The Whispernet is a wireless network connection through which the user accesses the company’s online bookstore.

The problem is that Amazon relies on an EV-DO modem, which is made to work only with Sprint’s network, so the entire concept of online shopping of books only works in the U.S.

This hardware design leaves Amazon with only two choices in order to make Kindle available worldwide. First, they might choose to change Sprint’s modem with other specific hardware depending on the region, meaning that Amazon might end signing endless contracts with various wireless carriers. Second, they might go the easy way and simply disable Kindle’s ability to access the Internet.

This means that users would have to browse for books through their computers and then transfer the files to Kindle. However, this way, much of the device’s usability features will be gone, including online access to newspapers, blogs and Wikipedia.

The new generation of the Amazon Kindle eBook reader was released on February 11. The device is slimmer and more easy to use than the previous generation. However, it still shares some of the hardware components with its older sibling, such as the black/white screen and the 3G wireless modem.

Of course, there are plenty of alternatives out there, but one cannot pass over a full-featured device as Amazon Kindle. Moreover, some even argue that the first generation of Kindle was the one to actually make eBook readers popular.
