Kindle 2 … Amazon Could Have Done Better

The second-generation Kindle has been announced less than two days ago, and the pros and cons are more ardent than ever. I think Amazon should have consulted a wish list before even starting to ensemble Kindle 2, since it looks like there are more cons than pros.

Kindle 2 doesn’t sound very convincing to me, since switching from the original Kindle to the new one would be like switching one pair of shoes with another…nothing too exciting about that. It does look less like an alien, and more like what a gadget should look like these days, but it continues to offer pretty much the same thing, just in a different package, with a few exceptions of course.

In addition to that, users have complained about the new battery, about the lack of an SD card, about the lack of a touch-screen (yes, the controls are just as disappointing as in the first-generation one) and more.

It did maintain one thing though, probably the one that will weigh the most in deciding whether to purchase Kindle 2 or not: the price. Yes, Kindle is fun to have around, but I don’t think it’s worth $359, especially since you’re going to have to pay for what you’re reading anyway, and in my personal opinion, nothing compares to the feeling of reading a real book (although in a few years’ time, real books will be replaced by e-books).

Don’t get me wrong, I always keep my eyes open for the latest gadgets; this is perhaps why Kindle 2 sounds not so impressive to me. And judging by the large number of requests, and reasons why not to have one, which have appeared in the media over the past days, Amazon should probably rethink its marketing strategy for this one.
