Kwame Kilpatrick, Detroit’s former Mayor, was released from prison early Tuesday.
His prison image was in a very high contrast with the public image of glamour that people were used to. Mr. Kilpatrick had a bushy beard and lost a considerable amount of weight. He spent 99 days in jail as part of the plea agreement after he was involved in a sex scandal which led to his impeachment. Under the plea agreement, Mr. Kilpatrick is bared to run for pubic office in the next five years during which he is on probation.
After 99 days in jail, Mr. Kilpatrick left the prison just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was dressed in a dark suit and was greeted by about two dozen reporters and few onlookers. The 38-year-old former mayor, also dubbed “the playa mayah” for his hip-hop attitude, left in a blue Chevrolet Suburban, part of a multi-vehicle caravan. Kilpatrick waived as he was taken to the car.
The former Detroit Mayor pleaded guilty in September to two felony counts of obstruction of justice after he lied about an extra marital affair. The false testimony was contradicted by text messages with sexually explicit content send by the former mayor.
Kilpatrick had exchanged more than 14,000 text messages in 2002 and 2003 with his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty. Spicy parts of those messages – such as "I'm madly in love with you" - were brought to the public’s attention by the Detroit Free Press.
Mr. Kwame Kilpatrick was reportedly heading to Texas for a job interview scheduled for Wednesday, according to defense attorney Willie Gary. However, he will have to be back in Detroit by February 9.
