Keanu Reeves' 'Day The Earth Stood Still' Breaks Box Office Stillness

Facing barely any competition, Keanu Reeves' most recent movie, a remake of 1951's "The Day The Earth Stood Still," landed effortlessly atop of the box office with $31 million. The 20th Century Fox movie pulled in $70 million worldwide.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and scripted by David Scarpa "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is a remake of Robert Wise's 1951 film about an extraterrestrial visitor to the Earth, Klaatu, played by Keanu Reeves, and relationship with astro-biologist Helen Benson played by Jennifer Connelly. A self-described "friend of the Earth," Klaatu is on a mission to save the human world.

Despite mixed reviews, audiences were quick to watch the only major new release of the weekend prompting a shift in last week's movie chart. The film also did well with its 123 Imax showings, which according to Imax’s Greg Foster, moviegoers are willing to spend a few extra dollars to see a movie in Imax, despite the economic downturn.

"It's really one of those in-betweeners," Box Office Mojo's Brandon Gray said. "Not really a success, but not really a failure, either."

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn's holiday romp "Four Christmases" slipped to second place with $13.3 million while the movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's first book of the "Twilight" saga fell on the third spot with $7.9 million, boosting its total revenue to $150 million over the course of four weeks.

Rounding up the top five were Disney's "Bolt" with $7.6 million and Twentieth Century Fox' "Australia" starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman with $4.3 million, for a total of $37.9 million in three weeks.

The only other new wide release is Overture's "Nothing Like the Holidays," starring John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Alfred Molina and Elizabeth Pena. The flick opened in 1,671 locations and grossed $3.5 million placing seventh.

"Milk," the film which received a Golden Globe nomination for lead Sean Penn, was at No. 9 with total earnings of $2.6 million.

The overall box office plummeted compared with the same weekend last year, when "I Am Legend" opened with $77.2 million and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" debuted with $44.3 million.
