The jury weighing whether Keanu Reeves was at fault or not
for a paparazzo’s alleged incapacitating injuries was rapid in establishing
that the Hollywood actor had actually done no
wrong and the pap had lied through his teeth.
Alison Silva, a celebrity photographer originally from
Brazil, sued Keanu Reeves more than a year ago claiming to have been struck
down by the actor’s car in a March 2007 incident that left him with serious
injuries and unable to perform his job as before.
Silva sought $711,974 in compensation for medical bills and
other damages, claiming to have broken his wrist in the fall caused by the
alleged impact with Reeves’ car. He said the injury had left him unable to hold
the large cameras necessary to properly do his job as a photographer.
Keanu Reeves, 44, attended the trial and maintained
throughout that he had never hit the photographer. Reeves testified last week
that he had been visiting a private home in the Rancho
Palos Verdes suburb of Los
Angeles when the incident happened.
The actor said his car never touched Silva save for the
moment when the pap put his hand on the car’s hood. He said Silva walked
backwards and tripped over his own feet, falling to the ground. Reeves returned
to the home he had been visiting and asked his hosts to call 911, after which
he returned to Silva with a glass of water, which the photog refused.
It was Silva’s claim that Reeves had been driving
irresponsibly.
The Los Angeles County Superior Court jury was not convinced
by Silva’s claims, especially after a radiologist told jurors that Silva’s
wrist appeared to have been fractured years before. The defense also showed
jurors a video showing Silva use his hands to get down from a fence, while on
the job, after supposedly being so badly hurt by Reeves.
The actor was therefore cleared of any blame in the case.
