Actor Keanu Reeves was glad to find out a Los Angeles jury unanimously rejected a civil trial brought against the actor by paparazzi photographer Alison Silva, Los Angeles Times reported.
After deliberating for less than three hours, the jurors decided that the "Matrix" star is not responsible for the photographer's alleged injuries. Silva sued Reeves for injuries and damages sustained in an incident in which Reeves' car knocked the pap down as the actor was being swarmed leaving a parking lot in March 2007. The paparazzo said Reeves, 44, sped away after the incident.
Silva claimed he fell down and "permanently" hurt his left wrist, and couldn't work for 6 months. He actually asked the jury to award him $711,974, which includes medical bills, lost wages and punitive damages.
However, it turned out that Silva's injuries were not so "permanent" - the photog torpedoed his own case when a video surfaced of him scaling a wall to snap pictures of Britney Spears in the months following the supposed injury - bracing himself with the supposedly disabled wrist.
Over the course of the five-day trial, Reeves was present in court and testified that he didn't hit the photographer, rather the paparazzo tripped over his own feet and fell as the actor was inching his Porsche forward to leave a medical facility where he had been visiting a family member.
"To my recollection, I didn't hit him. I [saw] his legs cross and he [started] to kind of stumble," Reeves said as he took the stand. He also claimed that he stopped his car at the scene and asked bystanders to call emergency services.
A paid medical "expert" hired by the photographer told jurors the wrist fracture appeared to be an old injury, and an emergency room doctor said Silva admitted hurting his wrist playing soccer as a youth in Brazil.
Reeves' lawyers have said that Silva was not hurt at all and that the wrist fracture was an old soccer injury. In court papers, the actor's lawyers have said the paparazzo was desperate for cash because his car had been repossessed. They contend that he saw the confrontation with the actor as a way to make money.
Outside the Los Angeles Superior Court, Silva told reporters he "respects" the jury's decision. "This has been a life experience for me," he added. The film star, who was also in the courthouse, declined to comment.
Silva, who said he would continue to work as a celebrity photographer, said he will not stop trying taking pictures of Reeves either.
"I wish Keanu is happy in his life. I have nothing against Keanu," he added.
