After a more-than-decent Broadway premiere, Katie Holmes makes an appearance on hit television show Eli Stone. Her scenes involve a jazz number, as she plays the part of a ditzy lawyer that the main character, Eli Stone, starts to develop an interest for. Whether Katie Holmes sang herself in the jazz scene or whether she was merely lip-syncing is a question that fades from your mind when you watch her dance. You may wonder why Katie Holmes was picked to star in an episode of a pretty controversial show. The answer is Greg Berlanti, the co-creator of “Eli Stone” and a former writer on “Dawson’s Creek”, the show that made Katie Holmes famous. “Eli Stone” shares its name with that of the show’s main character, a lawyer from San Francisco. Eli Stone discovers that he has a brain aneurysm, which might kill him but at the meantime offers him predictive visions. Much like some scenes from “Ally McBeal”, Eli Stone’s visions also involve singing and dancing. Although having the structure of a court-room drama, the show tries to avoid clichés and stereotypes. What can’t be avoided are the cranky, yet amusing judges and the law jargon, which gives the show a little more credibility. The humorous bits and cheeky lines make the show even more enjoyable. It’s still uncertain if Katie Holmes will raise ratings for “Eli Stone” and if this will increase the revenues brought in so far by the show. However, the addition to the cast is certainly fresh and surprising. Katie Holmes delivered a believable, realistic and enjoyable performance when she played April in family drama “Pieces of April”. Will she be able to play a lawyer credibly?
