Katie Holmes bravely made her Broadway debut in the Arthur
Miller play “All My Sons” Thursday night and husband Tom Cruise was on hand to
keep his fingers crossed for her, cheer on and call the performance “extraordinary.”
Katie Holmes is expanding her acting career. After starring
in television series “Dawson’s
Creek” as a teenager and growing into movies such as “Wonder Boys,” “Thank You
For Smoking,” “Batman Begins” and “Mad Money,” she is now for the first time
performing on Broadway.
She made her much talked about debut in “All My Sons”
Thursday night, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, with grace and great craft
according to media reports, cheered on by fans and booed by anti-Scientology
protesters.
According to The Associated Press, husband Tom Cruise, coincidentally,
Hollywood’s
most famous Scientologist, called the performance “extraordinary.” He was not
alone in his appraisal, as Holmes received a standing ovation.
The 29-year-old joins a stellar cast: multiple Emmy Award
and Tony Award winner John Lithgow, two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest
and the younger Tony-, Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated Patrick Wilson.
Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” opened on Broadway at the
Coronet Theatre in New York City in January 1947, directed by Elia Kazan and
was awarded the 1947 Tony Award for Best Play.
It was Miller’s first Broadway success and was soon adapted
for the big screen, with Edward G. Robinson, Burt Lancaster and Mady Christians
starring in the 1948 adaptation.
A made-for-TV film, starring James Whitmore, Aidan Quinn,
Michael Learned and Joan Allen, followed in 1986.
In the current stage production, directed by Simon McBurney,
Holmes portray Ann, a young woman whose fiancé has died in the war (the play is
set during World War II). She visits his parents (portrayed by Lithgow and
Wiest) whose surviving son (Wilson) has fallen in love with Ann.
The play opens officially on Oct. 16. Perhaps
anti-Scientology group Anonymous, generously represented by protesters Thursday
night, will not continue their demonstrations next month.
