Thursday
night, actress Katie Holmes made her official debut on Broadway, when the
revival of Arthur Miller's „All My Sons” premiered, after one month of
previews.
Starring
alongside Broadway veterans John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick
Wilson, Holmes gave life to Ann Deever, a young woman romantically involved
with the main character Joe Keller’s son Chris.
Played by Lithgow,
Joe Keller is a businessman whose factory has sold damaged airplane cylinder
heads to the United States
military, inadvertently causing the death of 21 men. Afterwards, he blames the
shipping of the damaged parts on his partner, justifying, before committing
suicide, that the reason behind his actions had been to protect his family.
His wife (Dianne
Wiest), Kate Keller, mourns after their younger son Larry, who has been Missing
In Action for three years and refuses to accept that Joe is responsible for the
death of the 21 men, although subconsciously, she knows it to be true.
“All My
Sons” opened on Broadway at the Coronet Theatre in New
York City on January
29, 1947 and was awarded a Tony for Best Play that same year.
For the
revival’s premiere, Patricia Clarkson, Jada Pinkett Smith, Barbara
Walters, Dennis Farina, Blythe Danner, Isabella Rossellini and Rebecca
Miller-the playwright's daughter-were all present in the audience. The latter
stated that she believed Katie Holmes to have been perfectly suited for the
part of Ann Deever.
Nevertheless, hubby Tom Cruise was nowhere to be seen at the
premiere, although he was there to cheer on Katie on the first night of previews, describing the play as having been extraordinary.
