As if poor Katie Holmes weren’t nervous enough due to her
upcoming Broadway debut, the actress has every reason to be even more concerned
because of the reported anti-Scientology protests threatening her play.
An anti-Scientology group called Anonymous has announced
plans to perform a sidewalk protest during the opening night of the Broadway
revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” scheduled for October 16.
The 29-year-old former “Dawson’s Creek” star is often linked to
Scientology, as she is married to actor Tom Cruise, who is one of Scientology’s
public figure adherents.
The Anonymous group, said to be a loose organization of approximately
9000 people, has coordinated a series of anti-Scientology protests over the
last several months, with members attending various events wearing Guy Fawkes masks.
The “leaderless worldwide group of concerned citizens,” as they describe
themselves, recently picketed the Scientology
Center in New York.
A representative for the group told MSNBC.com Anonymous’
precise purpose for intending to protest at New York’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre next
month is far from being the closure of the show.
“We aren’t looking to shut it [“All My Sons”] down, we don’t
have the power to do that, we just want to prove a point,” the spokesperson
said. “We want to draw attention to Scientology, and hopefully get Katie out of
it before it’s too late.”
The revival of Arthur Miller’s play, helmed by Simon
McBurney, will also star Tony Award winner John Lithgow, Academy Award winner
Dianne Wiest and Tony Award nominee Patrick Wilson. The show begins previews on
September 18.
