Karzai Safe after Taliban Assassination Attempt

The Taliban militants carried out an attack during a military parade in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. The target of the attack was the country’s president Hamid Karzai.

Luckily, Karzai has escaped the terrorist attack unharmed and so have the other dignitaries who attended the parade.

At least one person was killed and eleven were wounded in the attack, according to BBC. Two MPs and two lawmakers were among the wounded. The person who was killed hasn’t been identified yet.

The military parade was a celebration of 16 years since the country's Soviet-backed rule was overthrown.

Mr. Karzai, as well as numerous Cabinet members and foreign diplomats, were quickly evacuated from the area as gun shots broke out, Defense Ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said.

The gun fire broke out after Mr. Karzai carried out a formal inspection of the troops.

The Taliban claimed the attack through their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, who said that the militants had fired rockets and automatic weapons at the podium where the high ranking officials were seated.

Three Taliban fighters equipped with suicide vests and guns were killed in the fire exchange. Six of them were deployed near the parade.

President Karzai confirmed the arrests made after the attack in a live TV address to the people of Afghanistan.

"Fortunately Afghan security forces quickly surrounded them," he said. "Some of them were captured."

"Everything is calm, rest assured."
