Kanye West’s Mother Dies In LA Hospital (Update)

The rapper’s mother and manager Donda West, 58, who also served as chief executive of West Brands LLC, the parent company of Kanye’s business enterprises, and former teacher at Chicago State University, faced a sudden death in a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday.

The news was confirmed in a statement released by a family spokesperson, who asked that his name remained anonymous because not all family members had been notified yet, People reported.

"The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief," the statement read.

Although no cause of death has been given initially, according to the BBC, her publicist Patricia Green said Donda passd away "as the result of complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure."

"May Donda's work and deeds be an inspiration to each of us, may we start each day knowing that support of family and community are central to purpose," Green’s statement added.

According to reports, the 30-year-old rapper had just landed in London when the news struck him, and he immediately flew back to Los Angeles to be with her fellow family members.

Kanye's writing partner Rhymefest expressed his regret towards Donda West's death Sunday in an appearance on Chicago radio station WCGI.

"She was everyone's mom," Rhymefest said. "A spirit never dies, a spirit lasts forever."

Raising Kanye alone after divorcing his father, Dona established a very strong bond with her son, who has always publicly celebrated their relationship and even recorded a tribute to her called "Hey Mama" which appeared on his 2005 album "Late Registration."

"Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you ... I appreciate what you allowed for me. I just want you to be proud of me," lyrics say.

The musician, who never hid the fact that he and his mother were very close, once said he doesn’t take any important decisions without consulting her.

In an interview for Jet Magazine Donda West said that she trained her son for greatness. "There is no room for shyness. I raised him that way, to think critically and analytically and not be afraid to voice what you feel. I helped shape that. I think leaders are people who must do that."

Kanye and his mother, who retired from her post as professor and chair of the English Department at Chicago State University in 2004 to become his manager, teamed up for many projects including the Kanye West Foundation, a nonprofit organization which fights against the dropout problem in high schools aiming to improve literacy.

"She always gave me support," Kanye West said. "A lot of parents don't train their kids to think."

Earlier this year, Donda published a book entitled “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar” which recounts her experiences as his mother. The book led to Donda’s appearances on Oprah and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Throughout her life, Donda always showed her support regardless of the controversy her outspoken son caused.

"I support my baby," she said in a Chicago Sun-Times interview. "He is telling how he feels and he is speaking the truth as he sees it."

Kanye is also set to make his literary debut early next year with a book called "Thank You and You’re Welcome," which he described as an "entertaining volume of 'Kanye-isms,' the creative, humorous and insightful philosophies and anecdotes used in creating my path to success. It captures the same wit, playful irony and piercing insight found abundant in my lyrics," according to his website.
