Rapper Kanye West was greatly frustrated when he didn’t win at the MTV Video Music Awards a week and a half ago but at least he can now comfort himself with his album sales victory over 50 Cent.
Kanye was reportedly mighty upset when he lost to Justin Timberlake in the best male category at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 9 and also upset Britney performed on the grand stage while he had one of the private suits.
All this could be water under the bridge now that his third studio album, “Graduation,” has outdone 50 Cent’s “Curtis.”
The two albums were both released on Sept. 11, in a much-hyped sales battle between the two artists. 50 Cent notoriously declared that he would retire if Kanye beat him… and Kanye has beaten him.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, West has sold more than 957,000 albums, while 50 sold 691,000 copies in the past week. No word yet whether the gangsta rapper will keep his promise.
50 Cent must have been so confident of his triumph because of his previous success over Kanye. In 2004, he sold 1.14 million copies of “The Massacre,” while Kanye’s “Late Registration” sold an impressive and at the same time more modest 860,000 copies.
Kanye waved 50’s challenge aside earlier this year, saying: “I thought [the debate] was the stupidest thing. When my album drops and Fifty's album drops, you're going to get a lot of good music at the same time.”
Jay-Z, president of and CEO of West’s label, Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam, said: “This is a great day for Kanye West ... and a fantastic day for hip-hop and artistry. It’s a good sign that heartfelt, sincere and honest music can do these types of numbers.”
“It signals that with the right amount of attention and a credible album, there is still an interest in buying physical CDs,” the hip-hop mogul added.
While “Graduation” and “Curtis” topped Billboard's albums chart, country star Kenny Chesney’s “Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates,” followed at no. 3, with 387,000 copies.
Kanye’s sales with “Graduation” are the largest since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” and the first album to surpass 800,000 since his own “Late Registration” sold 860,000 copies in August 2005.
Kanye has been a gentleman about outselling 50. He turned up at GQ's 50th anniversary party on Wednesday as the featured performer and regally said, “To be a champion, you've got to take out a champion,” reports the AP.
