The jury didn’t take more than an hour to figure out that a tabloid paparazzo didn’t have what he needed to sustain the case against actor Keanu Reeves. This after the photographer made efforts to take the case to trial for more than a year now.
The Superior Court panel in Los Angeles ruled that Mr. Reeves has no obligation of any kind to the paparazzo who claims that the actor bashed into him with his Porsche in Rancho Palos Verdes.
According to the photographer’s declarations, he suffered a broken wrist, a handicap which made him unable to perform his job properly because he couldn’t hold the large cameras anymore. Alison Silva asked to be compensated with $711,974 which included medical bills, lost wages and other damages.
Mr. Reeves told the jury that he did not hit the photographer. Silva tripped and fell off his feet as he was trailing the actor who was visiting a relative at the hospital. The accident happened in March 2007 as Mr. Reeves was puling out his Porsche from the medical facility’s parking lot.
According to a radiologist’s report, Silva’s wrist fracture appeared to be an old injury, while another doctor said the photographer actually admitted that he suffered the old injury while playing soccer as a youth in Brazil.
The paparazzo’s credibility was even more seriously damaged when the defense attorney showed the jury a video in which Silva was scaling a razor-wire fence to shoot video of Britney Spears using his left hand to brace himself.
"We obviously felt from day one that Mr. Reeves was not negligent," Mr. Reeves’ attorney Alfred Gerisch told reporters after the verdict was read. "It's unfortunate that this lawsuit was brought, and it's unfortunate that we had to go this far - a lot of time, a lot of effort and obviously a lot of money."
