The Peninsula Humane Society and Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued a warning to pet owners,
advising them to keep their dogs indoors during the Fourth of July fireworks.
It’s been noticed that animals get seriously
stressed by all the noise and the powerful lights and sometimes escape from the
yards in which they are being kept. If this happened to you yesterday, you
should pay the humane society a visit, as pet identification can’t be done over
the phone. Owners were also instructed to make sure their pets wear name and
address tags at all times.
The address for the humane society’s
headquarters and shelter is 12 Airport Blvd near Coyote Point Park in San
Mateo.
According to Scott Delucchi, humane society
spokesman, each July 4 fewer and fewer stray dogs are seen; this is definitely
a sign that people are becoming more responsible. However, stories about
frightened "dogs breaking through fences" and jumping over or going
under gates are heard every summer.
Drs. Race Foster and Marty Smith, owners of
Doctors Foster and Smith pharmaceutical and pet supply company in Wisconsin,
said pet owners should try to provide their dogs with a "safe haven."
According to the doctors, some animals are more comfortable in small spaces
such as kennel crates and bathrooms. The company’s website recommends several
natural therapies for stressed out pets.
