The latest X-Men move will be written by the executive producer of GG, The O.C. and Chuck, Josh Scwarts. This is an interesting move and comic book fans are wondering how the movie will turn out under his command. Josh Schwarts will write the script and possibly direct X-Men: First Class and, according to Variety, he will try to inject some next-gen sensibility into the superheroes.
This might seem like a good idea, and the latest Batman movie proves it very well, but X-Men fans are wondering if this move can also work on mutants. There is a strict line distinguishing Batman from the mutants in X-Men. The fact is that the latter already stand for something; they are “special”, different from others, but are rejected from society, thus making them even more human or real might be a tricky thing to do.
X-Men: First Class focuses on the early days of Xavier’s mutants, highlighting the stories of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel, and The Beast. Some worry that Schwartz’s touch will make the characters seem superficial, portraying teenage dramas and not focusing enough on their mutant powers and, of course, action. The X-Men are very different from other superheroes as they already have very well defined pasts and personal dramas and are rejected by society. The human issues already exist so highlighting them is a tricky move.
X-Men: First Class is the fourth installment in the X-Men movie franchise and taking in account the huge success the previous movies had, it might be safe to say that not changing the formula is a good thing.
