Kerstin Fritzl, 19, who lived her entire life as a prisoner
of her father Josef Fritzl in a subterranean dungeon, is currently in a coma
from which medical experts claim she will not recover.
“The young woman is in a critical condition. She is
suffering from multiple organ failure. That means her chances of survival are
very low,” a spokesman at the hospital where Kerstin is being cared for
declared. If the girl dies, prosecutors will bring a charge of murder against
her 73-year-old father who kept her locked up in the cellar under his home in
the town of Amstetten.
Kerstin’s mother Elisabeth, 42, who was kept in the cellar
for 24 years, is currently being treated at a clinic outside Amstetten. Policemen
described the woman as “very disturbed.” Her sons Stefan, 18, and Felix, five,
who were kept underground their entire lives are being treated by a team of
psychologists.
Elisabeth
Fritzl was kept in an underground dungeon where the ceiling was just 1.70
meters. She told policemen that her father began drugging her in August 1984
and kept her in the cellar abusing her for over two decades. Investigators said
a letter written by Elisabeth surfaced a month after her disappearance, asking
her parents not to search for her.
The
incestuous relationship allegedly produced seven children, who are now between
5 and 19 years old.
Fritzl
admitted holding his daughter Elisabeth captive and fathering her seven
children. It emerged that he also faced a series of rape allegations in the
past. It appears Fritzl was convicted of one rape and jailed for 18 months in
the 1960s. A second alleged victim declared she was also raped by Fritzl around
the same time.
Fritzl was remanded in custody Tuesday. He is in isolation,
as inmates locked up on pedophilia charges are frequent targets of attacks by
other prisoners, AFP reports.
Josef Fritzl lived upstairs with his wife, Rosemarie, who
police said had no idea about her husband’s other family living in the cellar.
