Making one of the toughest choices so far, between a singer and an entertainer, "American Idol" fans took their pick, and 17-year-old Jordin Sparks won the contest.
With the voice and aura of a professional, Sparks made it easy for voters, putting up a performance that proved she deserved to win the sixth season of "American Idol."
"Last week I didn't think you were good enough to make the finals," one of the judges, Simon Cowell, known for his acerbic comments, told Sparks after the last of her three songs. "[But] you just wiped the floor with Blake on that song."
Sparks from Glendale, Arizona, prevailed over 25-year-old Blake Lewis of Bothell, Wash, who will most likely be offered a record deal, along with season favorites Melinda Doolittle who was voted off last week, and LaKisha Jones.
Backstage, Lewis said he wasn’t upset with the fans’ choice at all.
"I picked Jordin Sparks at the top 24 as the American Idol winner," he said proudly. "I was actually going to try to wear a `Vote for Jordin Sparks' T-shirt last night but they wouldn't let me do it."
Growing up watching “American Idol,” since she was 12, Sparks recalled telling her mother it was what she wanted to do.
"Now I'm actually doing it,” she told reporters backstage after winning the competition in Wednesday's season finale.
"Thank you so much for everything," she told the crowd. "Mom, Dad, I love you. Nana, Papa, P.J., thank you guys."
