Jones Beach Evacuated as Unexploded 4th July Fireworks Wash Ashore

Authorities evacuated Jones Beach on Saturday after park officials said they found unexploded fireworks which remained after a Fourth of July show. The unexploded fireworks had been washed ashore the popular Long Island beach.

Authorities discovered seven other shells on Sunday at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh bringing the number of unexploded fireworks found to 90. Investigators believe the fireworks fell off a barge into the water and were then washed ashore, New York State Police Chief Richard O'Donnell said. The barge is owned by Farmingdale-based Bay Fireworks.

Bay Fireworks’ president, Charlie Rappa, said in an interview that his company tries to track the shells which do not explode but he has never witnessed an "anomaly like this," as he put it, NewsDay.com reported. After ending in the ocean’s water the shells were unlikely to pose any danger, said Rappa. However, police took no chances.

"If they were to dry out and there was a spark, they could go off," park police Sgt. Tony Astacio told Newsday.

Authorities evacuated as much as 2,000 visitors after the leftover shells were found at approximately 12:45 p.m. However, the pyrotechnic show went off as planned and gathered about 140,000 onlookers.

This was the first such accident in the 14-year history of the Fourth of July pyrotechnics show on Jones Beach according to George Gorman, deputy regional director for state parks.

Jones Beach, a resort which attracts 7 million visitors a year, remained closed on Sunday as authorities kept searching for unexploded fireworks. Fortunately, none of the shells has exploded and nobody had been hurt.
