Remember those glory days of ‘N Sync, BackStreet Boys and
5IVE? Apparently, the boy band era has had a regression and now it’s overcoming
it. The boy band craze is back again and for the moment, the epitomic group is
The Jonas Brothers.
The rock trio landed on the first position of the US
album chart for the first time, with their full-length material “A Little Bit
Longer.”
For the week ended August 17, the album sales totalized
525,000 copies, as Nielsen SoundScan reported. These figures make the Jonas
Bros’ release the third-highest album of 2008, following Lil Wayne’s “Tha
Carter III” which sold 1,006,000 copies and “Viva La Vida or Death and All His
Friends” signed by Coldplay (721,000).
Also, the Jonas Brothers – which includes siblings Joe,
Kevin and Nick - had another Billboard performance: the band had two albums
simultaneously among the highest 10 positions of the Billboard 200 chart. Their
sophomore eponymous album rose from No.11 to No. 10, with sales of 31,000. It is a record that hasn’t been achieved by
any other artist since January 2, 1999, when boy band ‘N Sync had their
self-titled album on the second position and their “Home for Christmas” album
at No. 10. See? It’s a boy band thing.
Moreover, the
soundtrack of Disney Channel’s “Camp
Rock” which features the
Jonas Brothers remains at No. 8 for a second week, gaining 6 percent and
selling 50,000. Totalizing 861,000 copies since its June release, the disc
already hit the tenth position of the best-selling album of the year chart.
The soundtrack to “Mamma Mia!” which was the last week’s
first position descends one notch to No. 2, with a 16 percent drop and 110,000
copies sold. The present No. 3 is the last week’s No. 4 - that is, Kid Rock’s
“Rock N Roll Jesus,” with 101,000. “Breakout,” signed by Miley Cyrus falls from
the second spot to the forth.
Facing a 27 percent slide and recording 67,000 copies sold,
Sugarland descends from No. 3 to No. 5 with “Love on the Inside,” while Lil
Wayne’s “Tha Charter III” warms the No. 6 with 62,000. Coldplay recorded a 10
percent decline and descended from the sixth to the seventh spot, “Viva La
Vida” selling 50,000. Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad” remains on the No. 9,
after a 3 percent drop to 42,000. As we’ve mentioned, on the tenth spot, the
Jonas Brothers climbed one notch with their “Jonas Brothers.”
