Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, Friends Christmas Shopping

Longtime friends and eccentric collaborators Johnny Depp and Tim Burton were spotted doing some early Christmas shopping in London’s Forbidden Planet store.

Actor Johnny Depp and filmmaker Tim Burton were in the store for about an hour and left weighed down by lots and lots of bags filled with toys, according to media reports. As well they should, since Depp is father to two tots while Burton is expecting his second baby in about two weeks’ time.

Johnny and his girlfriend of nearly a decade, French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, are parents to Lily-Rose Melody Depp, 8, and Jack Depp, 5.

Tim Burton has been in a relationship with British actress Helena Bonham-Carter since 2001. Their first child, Billy Ray Burton, turned 4 last month. Bonham-Carter is pregnant with their second child and is reportedly due next month.

Burton and Depp first worked together on the 1990 cult film “Edward Scissorhands,” which garnered both artists much praise. They went on to work on “Ed Wood,” “Sleepy Hollow,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Depp also provided Victor Van Dort’s voice in the 2005 stop-motion-animation film “Corpse Bride,” nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Depp also stars in Burton's adaptation of the Steven Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd.”

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” co-stars Bonham-Carter, Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen and is scheduled for December 21 release in the U.S.

The film tells the story of a barber (Depp) who is sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. When he is released, he learns that his wife and daughter have perished and swears revenge. Grief-stricken, he turns into a serial killer, who mercilessly slits the throats of his customers.

Bonham-Carter portrays the similarly psychotic Mrs. Lovett, who bakes the victims’ corpses into pies.

Burton and Depp have said in interviews that the movie is an ode to the old classic horror films.

As to the musical aspect of the movie, it is indeed musical, as both Depp and Bonham-Carter auditioned and practiced for their singing bits in the movie.

It was recently announced that the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike has led Warner Bros. to cancel production on what would have been Depp’s next project, the Mira Nair-directed “Shantaram,” based the Gregory David Roberts novel of the same name.

Tim Burton meanwhile is returning to his roots and has signed a two-film deal with the Walt Disney Company. He will direct a big-screen version of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel “Alice in Wonderland” and a remake of his 1984 short film “Frankenweenie.”

“Alice” will combine live-action with state-of-the-art performance capture and be released in Disney digital 3-D, while “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in stop-motion animation, like the previous “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Corpse Bride.” It will also be released in 3-D.
