The rebellious rocker in Hollywood actor Johnny Depp was reunited with his former band The Kids on Friday night when he took the stage and performed to help raise money for a children’s charity in Florida.
This was not the first time the actor joined the band for a good cause, and Friday's night performance was in the honor their former manger, Sheila Witkin, who passed away from leukemia two years ago, with proceeds going to the Dan Marino Foundation, which funds programs for children with special needs. Marino's 17-year-old son Michael is autistic. The band also reunited in January 2007 for the same cause.
Over 2,500 people, including his partner singer Vanessa Paradis and their 9-year-old daughter, Lilly Rose, cheered as he jammed his way through the 90-minute set, which consisted of original 1960s-inspired pop tunes, as well as classic covers, according to People. Sporting a blue T-shirt, torn jeans, and a flannel shirt tied around his waist, Depp was the lead guitarist and sang background vocals on some of the tracks as well as The Ronettes’ "Be My Baby." According to People, Depp arrived early on Thursday, so he could have sometime to rehearse as well as pose for photos with Marino and the rest of his band.
The 45-year-old "Pirates of the Caribbean" star dropped out of high school when he was 15 to pursue a musical career and was still a student in Miramar, Fla., when he joined The Kids, his second musical group. Depp moved to Los Angeles with them in search of a record deal but when the band broke up, Depp decided to dip his toe in acting, as advised by actor Nicholas Cage.
He made his film debut in 1984's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" but shot to stardom three years later when he replaced Jeff Yagher in the role of undercover cop Tommy Hanson in the popular TV series "21 Jump Street."
Since dropping his musical career, Depp made a name for himself by staring in a number of critically acclaimed films, including "Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Sleepy Hollow," and "Finding Neverland." He can next be seen starring alongside Colin Farrell and Jude Law in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," late actor Heath Ledger's last movie role before his death earlier this year. Music-wise, Depp recorded his own solo album and contributed his guitar skills to English rock band Oasis' track Fade In-Out in 1997.
