John McCain Ready To Patch Things Up With David Letterman

After suddenly pulling out of his appearance on David Letterman less than a month ago, Republican Presidential nominee Sen. John McCain is attempting to make nice with Letterman agreeing to appear on his show this Thursday, October 16.

McCain canceled his plans to be on Letterman's show in late September, leaving him scrambling to fill time. He personally called the talk show host explaining that he had to fly off to Washington and could not show up because "the economy is about to crater" and he needed to take care of it immediately.

"I think people would rather see Sarah Palin, and maybe I’ll send her for you next time," McCain reportedly told Letterman in his phone call.

Although Letterman initially understood, when he busted McCain doing an interview with Katie Couric at the same time he was supposed to be appearing on his show, he was fuming, "Now I'm feeling like an ugly date," were his exact choice of words.

In the next show after McCain's interview with Couric, Letterman ranted continuously about McCain’s duplicity, even questioning what had happened to the man he had respected. He wondered openly if McCain had not come on his show because of dropping poll numbers.

A McCain spokeswoman said at the time that because of the economic crisis, the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."

Ultimately, McCain became the butt of jokes, and Letterman made it clear that he felt insulted and was unsure he would even give the presidential candidate another chance.

"One, suggesting there will be a next time, and I’m not sure that decision is his, and two, that maybe if there is he would bring Sarah Palin and she will come in his place… We’ll just wait and see, is he a man of his word or not?"

And it looks like the pressure Letterman put on McCain since September 24 worked and last Thursday, Letterman told the audience that "in an attempt to save his campaign, they’re talking about coming back." On Sunday, CBS announced that Mr. McCain had rescheduled his appearance for this Thursday, the day after the final presidential debate takes place at Hofstra University on Long Island. The appearance will mark McCain's 13th time in the guest seat. McCain announced his candidacy for president on the show in February 2007.

One can only wonder how will this affect McCain's image, because he's not doing too well in the polls, courtesy of that "cratering" economy he mentioned.

Hopefully, McCain will be able to make nice with Letterman, who had a feud going for 16 years with Oprah, although it was largely thought to be Oprah’s problem for taking offense to Letterman’s 1995 Oscars joke "Uma - Oprah, Oprah - Uma."
