When Jennifer Aniston suggested in her recent interview with Vogue that her boyfriend, rocker John Mayer, will not talk about their relationship publicly anymore, she probably didn't mean the small kind of comments Mayer just made at a charity ball.

John Mayer attended Alicia Keys' Annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball Thursday night and aside from having a really good time, he also slipped some of his thoughts on Jennifer Aniston.

"It's really nice to have somebody in life have your back," Mayer was quoted by People as saying. "That girl knows me ... so whether I go to bed alone or not, to have somebody who knows you in this world, that's a really nice thing."

Asked about his love life, in connection with Aniston's "lucky in love" statement, the singer joked, "I have not been very lucky. I've had a terrible life," but on a more serious note, when questioned about proposing, he said he believes he'd be "pretty good at that. I'd figure that out," he said, without going into details. "I'd get creative."

Speaking of his career, the musician explained to OK! that it's a challenge to still write personal songs when you personal life makes headlines.

"You just have to be a better writer. You just have to write better so you can take your experiences and process them in a way that people can relate to without going, 'Oh, he's singing about so and so. I don't feel like he's connecting with me. I feel like he's reminding me of what I already know about him.'"

In related news, Mayer also shed some light on his future career plans, saying that for now, it's all rumors that he would follow in Aniston's footsteps and star on a television show. Aniston just appeared on NBC's "30 Rock."

"I'm going to keep them rumors for the time being. I want everything to be as baked as possible before it comes out of the oven," he told People.

On the same night, just days after Aniston confirmed on Oprah's show that the pair was back together confessing she's "lucky in love," she and Mayer were spotted out on a romantic dinner in New York City. The two met up at Manhattan hotspot La Esquina late Thursday night, and then headed over to a club where they the couple hit the dance floor well into the morning.

Now more than ever, Aniston and Mayer surely appear to have settled into a warmer and more assertive relationship since rekindling their romance in early October, after their breakup in August, when Mayer wrote on his blog he ended the relationship because he doesn't want to waste anyone's time.
