The One Laptop per Child organization has succeeded in convincing several celebrities to promote their cause, but this time it is John Lennon’s turn to make a digitalized appearance and convince you to donate for a noble cause.
After Yoko Ono approved the creation of the advertisement, One Laptop per Child collected data about John Lennon’s face and voice and recreated a virtual appearance of the famous singer. The advertisement depicts Lennon, who riffs on his most popular song, “Imagine.”
With the song in the background, the artist talks about how different world would be if people made the right changes. His virtual replica states that everyone could “change the world” and persuades viewers to donate a laptop to the OLPC organization.
Other celebrities that supported the One Laptop per Child cause are Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Masi Oka from the television show “Heroes”. However, even though seeing John Lennon speaking about donating laptops might be quite uncanny for some viewers, it is clear this advertisement brought the OLPC cause out to the lights of media.
OLPC is a U.S. non-profit organization that aims to create an affordable educational device for use in developing countries. Its mission is to provide each child with a “rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop” with content focused on self-learning. The organization is currently developing and marketing the XO-1 laptop.
John Lennon still represents a strong image for people to listen to. He gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of the Beatles. Lennon died on December 8, 1980 when Mark David Chapman shot him in the back four times in the entrance hallway of the Dakota.
