Joe Johnston Agrees to Direct ‘The First Avenger: Captain America’

Joe Johnston, who is well known for directing hit movies "Jurassic Park III" and "Jumanji," has agreed to direct the comic-book adaptation "The First Avenger: Captain America," according to Marvel Studios.

The film producer also said that The First Avenger: Captain America," will most likely be released on May 6, 2011. On the same weekend of 2008, Marvel Studios scored a huge hit with "Iron Man," starring Robert Downey Jr.

“First Avenger: Captain America,” is another step made by Marvel Studios to build a film franchise based on its superhero team the Avengers, which includes Iron Man, the Hulk and Thor.

The film, "Captain America," is based on the character Steve Rogers, who gets involved in a research program and is transformed into a patriotic super-soldier. It hasn’t been decided who will have the lead role. The movie will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Joe Johnston was also the one who did the visual effects for “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He has also been working on the forthcoming remake of the classic horror movie “The Wolf Man.” The remake will be launched in 2009 and will star Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.

Johnston’s other credit include "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," "The Rocketeer" and "October Sky."
