Joaquin Phoenix shocked the audience at a benefit for Paul Newman's camps for kids Monday. The award-winning American and Puerto Rican actor announced in his speech that he plans to quit his acting career and focus on his music. It seems that his recent role as country legend Johnny Cash inspired the 34-year-old actor.
"I want to take this opportunity ... to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor," Phoenix told "Extra" at the San Francisco event. "I'm not doing films anymore."
Interviewer Jerry Penacoli couldn’t believe what he had just heard and asked Phoenix: "Are you serious?"
"Yeah. I'm working on my music," the two-time Oscar winner answered. "I'm done. I've been through that."
Although it would really be shocking that an actor as talented and passionate about his job as Joaquin Phoenix is, the actor’s representative confirmed the decision his client took.
Mr. Phoenix didn’t give any details about his career and future plans or projects. However, it is known that he has been working on a record with the British band called The Charlatans.
For his role as country legend Johnny Cash in the movie “Walk the line,” Joaquin Phoenix learned to play guitar. The movie was released in 2005 and the actor was nominated for an Academy award for his role in it.
Another one of his successful roles was in the 2000, hit movie Gladiator in which he co-stared with Russell Crow.
