A large number of people took to the streets yesterday, Sept. 21, to fight against cancer. The collective effort, organized in honor of those who have been affected by the disease, was part of the 20th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, presented by Hyundai Motor America.
The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is a charity walk on the famous Boston Marathon route. There are several routes participants can choose: 26.2 miles or 13.1 miles from Hopkinton; 13.1 miles from Wellesley; five miles from Boston College; or 3 miles from the Harvard Medical School Quad. As always, the walk will finish in Copley Square in Boston.
According to organizers of the annual event, more than $6.4 million have been raised last year by about 8,000 walkers. This year’s aim was to top $7.2 million.
At this year’s event the number of walkers was smaller. An estimated 7,500 supporters of cancer research took part to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, a national cancer center services part of a Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute. The funds will be directed toward the institute’s goal – fighting against cancer and related diseases.
In order to support the walkers and their fundraising targets, people can make donations through the Internet.
