Jim Leyritz, the Yankees hero,
faces serious accusations after killing a 30-year-old woman in a car accident
Friday morning. The Florida police arrested him in Fort Lauderdale and say he
faces manslaughter and drunken-driving charges.
Leyritz was returning from his birthday
celebration on Thursday night, when witnesses saw him going pass the red light
and ending up in an intersection at approximately 3:20 a.m. His 2006 Ford Expedition
crashed into a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero and killed Fredia Ann Veitch, who was ejected
from her car following the impact.
She was rushed to the hospital
by an ambulance, but the doctors could do nothing for her, as she was
pronounced dead. According to the police
report, Lyritz refused to take a breathalyzer on the accident scene, but he was
noticed to have “red, watery eyes, flushed face and the odor of an alcoholic beverage
coming from his person.”
According to witnesses, Leyritz
was unable to follow the instruction the police officers gave him, he stumbled
and managed to reach his nose in three of the six attempts he made, and failed other
roadside field sobriety exercises.
The next day he was seen coming
out of the Broward County jail after paying the $11,000 bond, apparently shaken
and scared. But the victim’s family and friends are not impressed by his story,
and say he should pay just like everybody else. He is responsible for killing a
young mother, leaving two helpless children behind, and his place is in jail.
In the meantime, Katherine
Collins from Fort Lauderdale Police Department said in a news release that the
police were still waiting for the blood test results before declaring whether
alcohol consumption was the cause of the accident.
The 1996 Yankees hero is not at
his first heavy drinking attempt. One year ago he admitted to having used human
growth hormone and amphetamines to get over a bad hangover. The 44-year-old twice-divorced
and father of three faces harsh charges of manslaughter and drunken-driving.
