Discussing the challenges of their roles in the new flick “I Love You Phillip Morris,” which debuted over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, actors Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, who star as two gay men who fall in love while in prison, addressed the scene where they lock lips.
Quizzed on how it felt to kiss McGregor, Carrey said, “A dream come true. I mean, look at the guy,” during a question-and-answer session with the audience after the film’s Sundance premiere Sunday night. If we didn’t know better, we’d say they make a rather cute couple.
As far as the role is concerned, Carrey, who most recently scored big box office success with “Yes Man,” where he smooches actress Zooey Deschanel, admitted he had some fears about taking on a gay character.
“If I were to be really honest, there is a homophobic voice that rises up inside me,” the actor confessed to reporters. “It goes 'that's kind of scary'. First of all, what will people think? And second of all, will I like kissing Ewan? How will that affect me and Jenny [McCarthy, his girlfriend]?”
McGregor on the other hand said for him playing a gay man was “the same as playing any other kind of man, any other kind of character.” As an actor, he noted that he’s always looking for interesting stories.
In addition to his film promotion duties, McGregor also picked up the Ray-ban award, presented to him by Alan Cummings, while at Sundance.
Written and directed by “Bad Santa” screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, “I Love You Phillip Morris” is based on the true story of a convict (Carrey) who, while in prison, falls in love with a fellow inmate (played by McGregor), and together they try to escape.
