Jerry Seinfeld is set to explore the comedic potential of marriage based on his own experience as the producer for a new reality TV show to air on NBC.
According to a press release from NBC, Seinfeld will be the producer of a show tentatively named “The Marriage Refs,” featuring celebrities, comedians and athletes who will judge couples in the midst of marital disputes while recommending various strategies to resolve their problems.
“Some of the greatest comedies in the history of television have been around marriages,” NBC co-chair Ben Silverman said. “The concept is so universal and accessible, and obviously it works so well when it comes from somebody with a point of view — and nobody has a stronger point of view on this subject than Seinfeld.” Six one-hour episodes have been ordered for a planned fall release.
Seinfeld, who will remain behind the camera as an executive producer and creator, insisted that the show is not a therapy show, but a comedy one. He’ll be partnering with Ellen Rakieten, a longtime producer on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” for the series.
“After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich,” Seinfeld added.
Since his hit sitcom, “Seinfeld,” aired its last episode in 1998, ending a nine-season run as one of the most successful shows in history, the 54-year-old comedian remained largely out of the public eye, until last year when he voiced Barry B. Benson in DreamWorks' animated film “Bee Movie,” and appeared alongside Bill Gates in an ad campaign for Windows Vista.
