The new Microsoft ad campaign, conceived to makes us all to
better like Windows Vista, has already two commercials and they both present
Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates trying to…
And this is the main problem. Trying to..? Nobody seems to
know for sure where they are heading with those commercials. If the purpose was
to get us all taking about Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld…well, mission
accomplished. But, the link with Windows Vista is nowhere to be seen. At least
until now…but who are we to judge what the masterminds from Microsoft and their
ad agency are “cooking”.
In the second commercial Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld are
trying to live with (let’s say at best), an average family, in other words they
are trying to connect with real people.
As Jerry Seinfeld tells Bill Gates, while lying on a child’s
bed, "You and I are a little out of it. You’re living in some kinda moon
house hovering over Seattle
like the mother ship. I’ve got so many cars I get stuck in my own traffic. We
need to connect with real people." So far, so good
The only problem is that the family seems anything, but
real. Dysfunctional…maybe, honored by the presence of the two famous guests…for
sure, but that’s about it.
And speaking of the family, I can’t’ help myself imagine,
how would I like an ad for Windows Vista with Bill Gates and the Bundy family
from the famous sitcom “Married with children”. However, there are several
funny moments, like the one when Bill Gates is trying to read a bed-time story
(a firewall is involved) or when the software magnate is doing the robot moves.
Also, the ad is too long (4 minutes and a half) and is
missing a final punch line.
In fact, right after the robot dance, the ad ends with
“Perpetually Connecting” words on a Windows Vista look-alike screen. Give me a
break, would you? 4 minutes to get this line?
So, it all might be just Web entertainment. Wondering about
the two commercial’s characters, it seems that they both need an image refresh.
But did they manage "perpetually connecting,” as the final screen shows?
