Jerry Seinfeld will appear in a series of commercials
designed to promote Microsoft's Windows Vista. He will be collaborating with
director Michel Gondry, whose best-known film is “The Eternal Sunshine of a
Spotless Mind.”
The comedian will appear in the ads together with
Microsoft's Chairman Bill Gates. Rumor has it that Jerry Seinfeld will be paid
$10 million for his appearance in the commercials. Even though this figure
looks like a huge one, it is just a very little fraction of the budget invested
by Microsoft in this campaign: $300 million.
It is believed that other comedians will join Seinfeld in
this campaign and there are reports tat Microsoft might use Chris Rock and Will
Ferrell also.
The campaign will be the largest and most expensive in the entire
history of the company. It is aimed to improve the image of the Windows Vista
operating system, as well as counterbalancing the effects of the “I'm a Mac,
I'm a PC” commercials that Apple ran.
The Apple commercials featured two actors, one playing an
office guy and representing a PC and the other one a young hipster that stood
for a Mac computer. The commercials have been a success for Apple, since they
bolstered the sales of Mac computers, while tarnishing Microsoft's image a
little bit.
It will be interesting to see how effective will be the
decision of using Jerry Seinfeld to promote Vista
to young people. The comedian is 54 years old, and it has been a while since
his once popular show had been aired for the last time. What is more, the campaign's
slogan, “Windows, Not Walls,” does not really seem that hip either.
