Jennifer Hudson Used Backing Track at the Super Bowl

Probably there is no one who has not heard Jennifer Hudson’s flawless performance of the national anthem at Sunday's Super Bowl opening. But people do not know the reason why it was flawless. It appears that Jennifer lip-synched the anthem to a previously recorded track.

Producer Ricky Minor insisted she did so, as well as Faith Hill, who sang "America the Beautiful" before the anthem, as he explained for the Associated Press that this was the right way to do it, because singing live requires too many variables and the slightest glitch would destroy the artist’s performance. Minor has produced numerous Super Bowl pre-game performances and he is also the music director for the "American Idol," so we should give the man a little credit, for he may know what he is talking about.

It appears that more and more artists agree with Minor’s explanation. This lip-synching thing was once considered an industry taboo, but, now it has become a rigueur for some of the best singers and musicians who perform at high-stakes live events such as the Super Bowl.

It is not a secret that many Super Bowl renditions of the national anthem, as well as numerous halftime performances, have been lip-synced. Even Whitney Houston's unforgettable performance back in 1991 at the Super Bowl which set the standard that most singers have tried to top is considered to have been developed the exact same way, according to The Associated Press. Shall we consider it fake then? We all know that Whitney is a great singer, and if she sang to a prerecording, well, it was a prerecording of her, not of someone else, so it’s ok. This goes for Jennifer Hudson too, who was probably ten times more nervous than usual, since this was her first public appearance after her family has been murdered last October.

But it became typical of performers at big stadium events to use backing tracks. Great artist like U2 or Madonna use prerecorded music at their concerts.
