Grief-stricken Jennifer Hudson has offered a $100,000 reward
for the safe return of her missing nephew, 7-year-old Julian, who has been gone
since Friday, the day the actress’s mother and brother were fatally shot in
their Chicago home.
Chicago police detectives
continue their investigation of the fatal shooting of Darnell Donerson, the
57-year-old mother of Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson, and Jason
Hudson, her 29-year-old brother.
The two were found shot to death in their Chicago
home by Julia Hudson, the actress’s sister, when she returned from work. Her
7-year-old son, Julian King, has been missing since Friday. A state-wide amber
alert has been called in Illinois
for the missing child.
Police investigators think the killings may have been caused
by a domestic disturbance. Julian King is thought to have been in the house
when the double murder took place. William Balfour, Julia Hudson’s husband and
step-father to the little boy, has been in police custody since Friday. The
27-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning and things do not look
well for him.
Sunday, he was transferred to state custody for violating
his parole – he had been on parole after spending nearly seven years behind
bars for attempted murder, hijacking and possessing a stolen car – because he
stopped cooperating with police in the investigation of the double murder and
Julian’s disappearance, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Balfour has denied being involved in the killings or
disappearance, law-enforcement sources told the Tribune, but his being named as
a suspect in the case constitutes a violation of his parole, since his transfer
to a state facility.
No charges have been issued against Balfour yet. Police officials
would only say he was being interviewed but a spokesperson for the Illinois
Department of Corrections said Sunday he had been named a suspect. Balfour’s mother
has denied he had anything to do with the slayings or Julian’s disappearance
and said Balfour had been thrown out of Donerson’s home at the deceased woman’s
request last winter.
Also Sunday, Jennifer Hudson issued a statement through her
publicist, Lisa Kasteler, expressing her gratitude for the support and
encouragement she and her family have received and offering a $100,000 reward
for the little boy’s safe return.
The previous day, Julia Hudson pleaded for her child to be
returned to her during a press conference held at the Pleasant
Gift Missionary Baptist
Church. “I don’t care who you are,
just let the baby go,” she said, adding that the whole family was in a state of
shock and that she did not know what else to do but pray.
Chicagoans have been showing their support all weekend, with
hundreds of people stopping by the family home to pay tribute.
The Chicago
office of the FBI is assisting Chicago
police in the case.
