She may have been forced to leave the third season of
“American Idol” prematurely, but Jennifer Hudson proved nonetheless that true
flair can really beat the popularity offered by a well-known talent show.
Although she entered the public eye only after she filled the shoes of Effie
White in “Dreamgirls”, a portrayal for which she won an Academy Award for Best
Supporting Actress in 2007, she eventually managed to continue her singing
career by releasing a self-titled album.
Some of the biggest names in the music industry have teamed
up to work on “Jennifer Hudson” and they did a good job, too. Behind
“Spotlight,” Hudson’s
first single, is none other than Ne-Yo and production team StarGate, who also
lent the singer a hand with “Can’t Stop the Rain.” Tank left his mark on “We
Gon’ Fight,” while T-Pain accompanies Hudson
on “What’s Wrong (Go Away).”
Nevertheless, Jennifer Hudson gives her best on “If This
Isn’t Love,” produced by Brian Kennedy, and the Robin Thicke-written “Giving
Myself.” Such tracks bring to light the 27-year-old singer’s amazing vocals,
which emanate self-confidence, emotion and moderation.
The most remarkable thing about the CD is the fact that Hudson’s big tones are
not exploited and are concentrated in well-ordered fragments in each song. And
that’s a huge plus.
In spite of the fact that some tracks may inspire
disappointment, they are not bad, they’re just not good enough. For instance,
“I’m His Only Woman,” Jennifer Hudson’s duet with Fantasia, produced by Jack
Splash and Missy Elliott, is more of a screaming gala than a true piece of
music.
Taken as a whole, “Jennifer Hudson” is pretty good. It may
not be flawless, but the buoyancy that dominates the tracks and the poise the
artist proves fortify the product and guarantee its commercial success.
